Mardi
Gras Masquerade. Join the New Castle Historical Society at
their Winter Warm Up event with a night of food, drinks, music and gaming.
Wear your favorite mask and you may even win a prize! In addition, there will be
many items available to win at our Silent and Chinese auctions. Tickets
are $65 per person, or $120 per couple and include light food, soft drinks, beer
and wine. Dress is black tie optional. Tickets will be available at the door
on Saturday night, February 18. The event is at Buena Vista Conference
Center, 661 S. Dupont Hwy (about 2 miles south of the Rt. 13/40 split).

NCHS Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the New Castle Historical Society will be held at the New Castle Court House Museum.
Following a brief business meeting, Chuck Fithian, state archaeologist, will present a lecture on Delaware during
the War of 1812 with special emphasis on New Castle and the U.S. Navy. The annual meeting and lecture are free and open to the public. 302.322.2794.

During the American Revolution. John Nagy, author, will present a
lecture on this topic at the New Castle Court House Museum. Sponsored
jointly by the New Castle Historical Society and the State of Delaware's Division of
Historical and Cultural Affairs, the lecture if free and open to the public.

Fashion Through The Ages.
Presented by the New Castle Historical Society in partnership with the State of
Delaware’s Division of Historical & Cultural Affairs, historic costume
expert Karen Jesse explores over 150 years of fashion using both authentic and

Thomas Holcomb and the Making of the Modern Marine Corps.
The
New
Castle Historical Society in partnership with the Delaware Military Heritage and
Education Foundation present author David Ulbrich who will
present a lecture on New Castle’s General Thomas Holcomb, Commandant of the
U.S. Marine Corps from 1936 to 1943. At the Immanuel Parish House, Harmony

Exhibit:
Captain John and Sarah Avery: A 17th-Century Family on Delaware's Frontier. A
new exhibit at the Old Library Museum explores Avery's Rest, a 17th-century
Sussex County, Delaware homestead settled by Captain John and Sarah Avery which
was excavated, analyzed, and conserved by the Archaeological
Society of Delaware between 2006 and 2010. Utilizing artifacts discovered at
the site as a point of reference, the exhibit will explore the shifting economic
and cultural traditions of the English and Dutch colonists, and their
interaction with local American Indian communities, illuminating the joys and
hardships of daily life in Sussex County in the late 1600s and early 1700s. At
the Old Library Museum, Weekends (excluding holidays), 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Free.

returns this year. The Amstel House, Dutch House and Old Library Museums will be

Annual Garden Party. Join friends and neighbors at our annual early summer
bash in the Dutch House gardens. If you haven't yet visited the new Dutch
Kitchen garden and the Delaware Native Garden, this is a perfect opportunity to
experience these wonderful new landscapes. Light refreshments are included with admission to the party!

Quilt Exhibit at the Old Library.
Historic Village Quilts of Old New Castle presents an exhibit featuring
historic, reproduction and modern quilts. Additional information will be
available soon!
October 3 through November 4
New
Castle in Mourning. Our annual mourning exhibit returns this
year at the Amstel House. Included with regular admission to the Amstel House.

Hauntings in History Walking Tours. If you are brave
enough to explore the darker side of New Castle's
history, then join the New Castle Historical Society this October for the only
ghost tour that brings you inside one of the most haunted mansions of
Old New Castle! You'll begin your journey into New Castle's
supernatural side with a tour of the legendary Amstel House - one
of New Castle's most haunted houses - where you may meet the "Woman in
Blue." After exploring the Amstel House, you will be guided through
New Castle's darkened streets and alleyways where you will hear macabre tales of
hauntings, Victorian death & funeral customs, and crime & punishment
that span the 360-year history of this Delaware River town. Tours are $10
for adults and $6 for children under age 12. Reservations required. To
make reservations, please contact the New Castle Historical Society at
302-322-2794. Group tours are available at alternate times. Tours are held rain
or shine. Please dress appropriately. Allow a minimum of 75 minutes for the tour.

The Spirit of Christmas. This town-wide celebration,
sponsored by the New Castle Presbyterian Church, presents private homes
and churches decorated for the season, and musical events throughout the
day. Admission will be free for the day at the Amstel House, which will be
decorated for a traditional colonial holiday celebration, and the Dutch House,
which will feature a celebration of St. Nicholas' Eve. The Amstel & Dutch
Houses open at 11:00 a.m.

Candlelight Tours. Join us for candlelight tours
of the Amstel and Dutch Houses, the Read House and the New Castle Court House.
Special evening tours will be held featuring music, food, drink and other
holiday merriment at four of Historic New Castle's museums. Admission to
all of the museums is $15 for adult members of the New Castle Historical Society
or the Delaware Historical Society, $20 for non-members and $10 for children
